Pregabalin & Gabapentin

Pregabalin & Gabapentin:

What are they used for?

Both gabapentin and pregabalin belong to a group of medicines that help calm overactive nerves in the body and brain. They can be used to treat some forms of epilepsy, nerve pain or anxiety.

What are the risks in Pregnancy?

Taking pregabalin during pregnancy may slightly increase the risk of birth defects, especially if used in the first trimester, when the baby’s organs are forming. The limited evidence on Gabapentin has shown there may be a small risk of preterm birth or low birth weight. It’s important not to stop taking this medicine suddenly, your doctor will guide you safely if any changes are needed.

Contraception

If you are taking pregabalin or gabapentin, it’s important to use effective contraception, as these medicines can slightly increase the risk of birth abnormalities if taken during pregnancy.

There are many reliable options available, such as the combined pill, contraceptive patch, implant, or longer-acting methods like the coil (IUD or IUS). Your doctor or pharmacist can help you choose the method that’s best for you.

If you are planning on becoming pregnant:

If you are planning a pregnancy or become pregnant while taking pregabalin or gabapentin, make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible to review your medicine.

Before stopping your contraception, speak with your doctor first so they can help plan a safe and healthy pregnancy for you and your baby. Do not stop taking your medicines suddenly as this can cause harm.

If you are already pregnant:

Do not stop taking your medications suddenly even if you know you are pregnant.

Arrange an appointment with your doctor or pharmacist so that your medication can be reviewed.

If you are breast feeding:

If you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, speak to your doctor or pharmacist, they will advise you on the safest option for you and your baby.
