Mounjaro & Contraception

Mounjaro and contraception

What Is Mounjaro?

  • Mounjaro is a prescribed injection used to treat type 2 diabetes and support weight loss.
  • It contains the active drug called tirzepatide that works by regulating your appetite and giving you a sense of “fullness” to make you feel less hungry and experience less food cravings.
  • This aims to reduce the amount of food you eat and reduce your body weight.

Why Contraception Matters When Taking Mounjaro?

  • Mounjaro is not recommended to take it during pregnancy, while trying to get pregnant or during breastfeeding.
  • If you become pregnant whilst taking tirzepatide, there may be risks to the baby.  Therefore, you should use effective contraception to avoid unplanned pregnancy while taking this medication.

Is this the case with other “skinny jabs”?

  • YES lots of weight loss injections including Mounjaro, Ozempic, Wegovy and Saxenda can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
  • Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you are unsure whether your medication affects your oral contraception.

How Does Mounjaro Affect Oral Contraceptives?

  • Mounjaro slows down how quickly food and medicines move through your stomach.
  • This can reduce how well oral contraceptives are absorbed. This means the pill may be less effective at preventing pregnancy, and you need to use additional contraception.

Contact your GP Surgery to speak to a Pharmacist, Practice Nurse or your GP about recommended contraceptions
