GP Registrar Training

Trinity Court & Claverdon Surgery proudly became a training practice in 2020 and (as at June 2025) host three GP registrars ranging from 1st year students through to 2nd year.  GP registrars are fully qualified Doctors, often with several years of experience working in other fields of medicine before making the decision to train as a General Practitioner. Their training programme is three years long, during which they spend one year rotating through a variety of relevant hospital or community placements, in additional to two full years in General Practice.

Practice Partner and Lead Trainer, Dr Jonathan Radford has been the head of this since 2020. Since then the team of trainers has expanded to include Dr Hurst, Dr Benge, and Dr Grieve, who all take an active part in the supervision of our GP registrars.

During the registrars’ training, we aim to give a comprehensive introduction into General Practice and in time, encourage registrars to gradually take on a full GP’s role including all activities and meetings.  We aim to provide the registrar with appropriate support and training throughout their transition into a competent, independent General Practitioner.

The training programme is developed according to the learner’s needs and all trainers and partners are in involved in teaching, supervising and giving of tutorials.  GP registrars have their own list of patients to see, but always with the supervision of an experienced GP to provide advice if required.

Placements are between four months to a year, depending on the stage of their training, during which time the registrar will become a valued member of the Practice. We take great satisfaction in supporting our registrars during their time at Trinity, and are proud to be helping in the development of the next generation of GPs.

Testimonial from past Registrar Dr Benedict Braid:

As a trainee in my second year, I spent eight months at Trinity Court Surgery between December 2022 - August 2023.

This period was crucial to my development as a GP. I consider myself fortunate to have worked with the team at Trinity Court.

Being a busy practice meant there was a variety of scenarios and patient experience and the support was always available.

This combination made for a truly impactful and pleasant experience.
