Cervical Screening is Changing
4 September 2025
The NHS Cervical Screening Programme is undergoing significant changes to enhance the screening process and patient experience. Here are the key updates:
Screening Every 5 Years: For those aged 25–49 who test HPV negative, screening will be conducted every 5 years instead of the previous 3-year interval.
Digital Invitations and Reminders: Digital invitations and reminders will be sent via the NHS App, providing quicker and more convenient access to the screening process.
Results Sent Directly to Patients: From September 2025, NHS England plans to send results directly to patients via the NHS App, with a backup letter sent if the app notification is not read within 72 hours.
These changes aim to make cervical screening more accessible and efficient, ensuring that eligible individuals can make the most of these life-saving services. Patients are encouraged to download the NHS App and ensure notifications are turned on to stay informed about their screening appointments and results.
