Gender Dysphoria & Hormone Prescribing

We understand that some of our patients may be exploring or seeking treatment for gender dysphoria.

Our GPs do not prescribe gender-affirming hormones directly. This is not because we do not support patients, but because of important safety reasons:

  1. Hormone prescribing requires specialist expertise in endocrinology and gender identity care.
  2. There are serious risks if treatment is not carefully managed, including blood clots, cardiovascular disease, liver problems, bone health concerns, and mental health complications.
  3. Safe prescribing needs regular blood tests and health checks, which are designed and led by specialist services.

What we will do:

  1. Treat all patients with dignity, respect, and compassion.
  2. Refer you to an NHS Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) or another appropriate specialist service.
  3. Support your general health and wellbeing while you wait for specialist input.
  4. Work alongside specialists where appropriate to support your general health and wellbeing.

This approach ensures your care is safe, evidence-based, and aligned with local guidance.
